Author Annabel Castro Some are ruined, some are not is conceived as a series of video sculptures where ordinary body gestures are choreographed utilizing algorithmic video editing functions based on principles typical of audio synthesis, such as granular synthesis. These processes shape the development over time of diverse video constituents that as a result cause the sculptures to have variations in their mood, attitude and demeanor. Each sculpture is constituted by a sequence of 2000 to 6000 images extracted from about 1 to 3 minutes of video footage where a woman is sitting or lying down against a black background. Each occupies space in its own way; their overall shapes result from selecting and mirroring a fragment of the woman’s body. These images were reorganized in different combinations through time utilizing algorithmic functions to control aspects such as frame rate, color saturation and transparency. Frames algorithmically selected and sustained for more than 0.8 seconds are meant to transform an unperceived fraction of movement into a mudra like gesture; it’s not a project goal to hide the fact that frame rate is being manipulated. On the contrary, frames should also have a presence aside from their function in creating movement. The purpose of these sculptures is to visit and re-visit meticulously a small fragment of time: focusing on the moment when a finger finally touches the cloth, next when it is still far from it, creating sorts of minute obsessed gazes. |
